What if I told you that at the end of the day numbers don’t matter? Will it be the end of the world if you were the slowest runner or didn’t score as many points in your game? Sure, you’ll be disappointed in yourself, but life goes on, right?
My coach does not like to give us numbers during training, meaning pace times, reps, etc. Is it frustrating? Absolutely! We have always been the type to want to know all the details in order to know how and when to push ourselves.
There is a method to this madness though: he wants effort. He wants to see us working hard. He wants to push us past our limits instead of focusing on the minor details. If we get caught up in numbers, then we hold ourselves back.
You know your body better than anyone else. If you know you can push harder, then do it! If you know you are not feeling your best, take it easy.
It has now been the third week of my season, and my mind set has changed, and it will for you too if you follow this: focus on the effort you can give. When you feel like you don’t have it in you, surprise yourself and push harder. The more effort you give, the more you get out of your training. It is up to you to decide on how hard you will push, because no one else can decide that for you. Train your muscles to remember what pushing your hardest felt like, and let it fly. Sky’s the limit, as long as you don’t hold yourself back!
