Do you remember when Yoda in Star Wars said “size matters not?” Well, this quote was all I could think about with what happened in one of our Cross Country practices!
First of all, our coach is also our school’s wrestling coach! I know that may seem odd, but in terms of training, there isn’t an enormous difference between the two.
We had finished a three mile run, and before we left the park, our coach made us sprint up and down a big, grassy hill ten times. This particular hill is the same exact hill he has his wrestlers climb up as well! Everyone thought they were crazy, and actually put them on a high pedestal! Just because they were bigger, meaning more muscle, and stronger than us, that’s why they could do it!
It was in that moment we forgot that we were strong too!
We’re Cross Country runners for goodness sakes! This is our specialty: running anything and everything from hills to grass to dirt to sand etc.!
I admit, I’m a huge victim of this: putting others on a high pedestal. Why do we compare ourselves to others? We were all born to be different. Sure, we all have our strengths and weaknesses, but why do we choose to be jealous of other people instead of admire them and feel inspired?
Sure, the wrestlers are extremely muscular, which makes them obviously very strong! Especially the girls, we are not built like them at all! We were built differently, and especially with Cross Country, we have A LOT of leg strength! We may even be faster than some of them, or they may be faster than us! Either way, we are talented and strong in our own ways! Why try to copy someone else when you can be original?
Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, focus on what you DO have! If you can run a mile in 5:30, EMBRACE IT! If you can lift 200 pounds, heck, SHOW IT OFF! We are meant to use our talents to better ourselves and the world around us! Love who you are, because there is only one you in this world!
