Now that it’s officially summer, you’re seeing it everywhere. Videos, magazine advertisements, basically anywhere you look, on how to get the “perfect beach body.” And, most likely on the cover, you see pictures of these gorgeous models posing in their bikinis, or guys shirtless and in their swim shorts in magazines.
Growing up, I have always been skinny. I eat healthy, drink water, sleep, and exercise. Basically, I try my hardest to keep a healthy lifestyle. When I am healthy, I feel my very best! However, when I see these models, sometimes I get caught up in the hype of wanting to obtain that “perfect beach body.”
Yes, I said I am already skinny, so why would I need to worry about this? Well, it’s because their body type is not mine. I don’t quite have the features that they do, such as that perfect hourglass waist shape, curvy hips, skinny legs, etc. My waist is not quite that perfect hourglass shape, I’m not curvy, and my legs are more on the muscular side than skinny.
Basically, the point I’m trying to make here is, while I am skinny, I am still not exactly what the media’s standards of “the perfect body” are. For example, I could be told that my muscular legs are “too fat,” or I need to slim down at the waist, etc.
That sounds like a lot of pressure, right? I mean, I’m already skinny, but how much skinnier could I possibly get? It’s so difficult, especially this time of year, to not get caught up in the hype of achieving that “perfect beach body.” First of all, there is nobody on this earth that is “perfect” to begin with. Besides our physicality, we all have problems, we all make mistakes, so achieving to be “perfect” at everything you do ALL THE TIME is impossible.
You know what I think? I think that it’s actually perfect to be IMPERFECT. If everything went exactly according to plan, I mean, that sounds nice, right? But, that certainly does not happen all the time. I think that it’s so much more interesting and INSPIRING to hear success stories along with the obstacles they faced. Additionally, you learn and grow more when you make mistakes more than when you don’t.
Anyways, back to the topic of models, because the media distorts that “perfect” vision, people feel like they cannot be truly happy unless they are considered to be what those “perfect” standards are. It can really hurt someone’s self-esteem. The models that have that “perfect beach body” were most likely touched up by professional makeup and hair stylists and by using Photoshop.
But again, we don’t remember that, because we get too caught up in the hype.
Now, I could tell you to love your body just the way it is, but I’m not. Why? Because I’m going to let you decide on that. That’s right, Y-O-U! If you are HAPPY in the skin that you are in, great! I ENCOURAGE you to EMBRACE that love you have for yourself, because, at the end of the day, you are the most important person in your life! And your happiness should always, always, ALWAYS be first priority!
But, if you are UNHAPPY with the body that you have, I encourage you to decide if you want to change that. Yes, if there is something about you that you don’t like, YOU have the power to change that. It’s not for anyone else to decide for you. Sure, you can have friends and family members recommend different things to try such as diets, fitness classes, etc., but they DO NOT make the decision FOR you. This is your life, and you only have one shot at it. YOU decide how you want to live it!
There are ALWAYS books, videos, articles, etc. on health and fitness tips. And now, there are apps that can help you keep track of your progress. There are THOUSANDS of gyms you can join! There are all of these great resources out there! It’s up to YOU to decide if you are going to take advantage of them!
There’s this quote that says, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” I encourage you to live your life with no regrets. Take chances and make mistakes. Think about and appreciate what you DO have rather than what you DON’T have. It’s silly to compare yourself to others, because we were all born different! Every day, when you wake up, you have the power to decide how you are going to live that day. Every single day we are given is another day filled with opportunities to explore, and there may be even some surprises in store! Every single day we are given is a gift. Treasure it, cherish it, make it your own.
